The Power of Thanks

By Paul Daniels

With Labor Day last week, this is a good time to thank your workers. Labor Day is the perfect opportunity to appreciate your employees for all they do and rededicate your commitment to creating a positive work culture that will bring rewards all year.

Retaining workers is even more important nowadays, with a labor shortage still affecting our industry. To do that, you need to make sure you create a culture of recognition in your business.

No matter how large or small your business is, creating a positive atmosphere will retain employees and customers. People want to do business with friendly organizations.

As I mentioned in an article last year, workers who are thanked for their work have lower turnover. At any level, we all enjoy someone saying, “Thank you.”

According to Eric Mosley, CEO and founder of Workhuman, when somebody receives more than five formal “thank you” moments in a year, their propensity to leave is cut in half, from about 15% to 7%. If they receive up to 12 moments of recognition per year from a manager or peer, that goes down to 2%.

Creating this culture in your business starts at the top. Thanks, begets more thanks. We all want to work for successful, positive organizations that we enjoy walking into daily. This doesn’t just happen without people at the top making an effort to appreciate the people in the organization that make it a success.

No matter how large or small your business is, creating a positive atmosphere will retain employees and customers. People want to do business with friendly organizations. When you call businesses of any kind, you can tell right away by how the people answer what the work atmosphere is like.

One of the best investments you can make for your company is to splurge on team bonding moments. Bring a taco truck and provide lunch for all or organize a trip to a baseball game.

To retain and attract good people to your business, you must give them a nice place to work. You need also to emphasize gratitude and recognition in your business. A good way to start is to say “thank you” sincerely and often.
