Labor Day, as always, is a good time to thank your workers.
Retaining workers is even more important, with labor shortages plaguing our industry. When I see news articles explaining how the job market is strong for the employed and unemployed in the trades, I know that creating a culture of recognition is important.
As I mentioned in this article last year, workers who are thanked for their work have lower turnover. We all enjoy hearing someone say “Thank you” at any level.
Author Eric Mosley states, “When somebody receives more than five formal ‘thank you’ moments in a year, their propensity to leave is cut in half, from about 15% to 7%. If they receive up to 12 moments of recognition per year from a manager or peer, that goes down to 2%.”
Creating this culture in your business starts at the top. Thanks, beget more thanks. We all want to work for successful, positive organizations that we enjoy. This doesn’t just happen without people at the top appreciating the people in the organization who make it a success.
No matter how large or small your business is, creating a positive atmosphere will retain employees and customers. People want to do business with confident, positive organizations. When you call businesses of any kind, you can tell immediately by how the people answer what that organization’s work atmosphere is like.
Labor Day is a good time to stop and appreciate your employees for all they do and rededicate your commitment to creating a positive work culture that will bring rewards all year. Bringing in a taco truck and providing lunch or organizing a trip to a baseball game for your employees is one of the best investments you can make in your organization.
To retain and attract good people, give them a nice place to come to work every day and try emphasizing gratitude and recognition. A good way to start is to say “Thank You” sincerely and often.
