Belichick and Brady Talk Leadership

I was listening to a sports show on the radio last week. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady were the guests. As a lifelong Patriots fan, I was interested in what they had to say.

This was the first time I had heard them together since the breakup. They discussed the old days and how teamwork was key to success. Brady brought up one point that got my attention: Belichick would always talk to the whole team, letting them all in on the game plan for the week.

Brady mentioned that since he left the Patriots, one thing he has noticed with other teams is that they break into their groups: offense, defense, special teams, linemen, defensive backs, etc. They don’t spend time as a whole discussing the gameplan.

Brady said this was one of the best things Belichick did weekly. He would lay out the complete plan for the entire team. The defense knew what the offense was doing, and the offense knew what the defense was doing. Brady said that during the game, the different groups did not question what was happening on the sidelines and knew why certain calls were being made.

This is a great lesson for your business as well.

Let the whole team know what is going on. Purchasing and manufacturing should know the sales plan, and sales should know what issues are going on with manufacturing. If you are an installation business, it is the same. The installers need to know the direction the company wants to take so they can sharpen the skills they need to stay productive.

If you are planning expansion, let your employees know. This way, when they see things like new trucks or people coming in for interviews, they are not left wondering or guessing what’s going on. Keeping the whole team informed on the game plan will ensure smoother operations, no matter how large or small your business is.
