Leading in a Slow Economy

I have been asked several times lately how your business is holding up and how you think tariffs will affect our industry. Both questions reveal how uneasy many in our industry are about the economy.

Our business is holding up quite well, and we have not seen any dramatic effects from tariffs. If you are worried about the future economy, the best thing you can do is make sure that your company is one of the leaders in your market. No matter how the economy fares moving forward, there will always be plenty of business for a company that stands out in its market.

I came across an article on LinkedIn last year. It was short and to the point, defining what it takes to be a good leader in your business and in your market. It noted that:

“Effective leadership is not simply about having authority and control over others. It involves taking responsibility for the well-being and success of your team. This means being a positive role model, providing guidance and support, facilitating communication, and empowering team members to make decisions and take ownership of their work.

“A good leader understands that their success is directly tied to the success of their team, and they prioritize creating a collaborative and supportive environment where everyone can thrive. By focusing on the needs of their team rather than their own personal gain, a great leader can inspire loyalty, trust, and respect and ultimately achieve greater success for the entire organization.”

The opening sentence of the second paragraph stands out for me. To be a leader in your market, you need a team around you that understands what the company goals are and how to implement them daily. As a leader, you need to listen to and trust the feedback your team gives you. People want to work for and hire companies that have strong leadership skills that come from the top.

To be a successful leader, you need to listen and learn from the team and customers you serve. We all want our companies to be extraordinary, which takes strong leadership and hard work.
