Charlie Munger had Three ‘Basic Rules’ for Career Happiness

By USGlass Editor

Legendary Berkshire Hathaway investor Charlie Munger passed away last month. He was known not only as Warren Buffett’s right-hand man at Berkshire Hathaway but also for his business and life advice.

Munger lived by three basic rules for career happiness. One of them was not working for anyone you don’t respect. This was followed up by “working with only people you enjoy.” Over the years, my career has followed these two basic rules. I have worked with a great group of people I respected and enjoyed working with daily.

Last month at GlassBuild America 2023, I met many people and companies that succeed because they have built a culture their employees and customers respect and enjoy working with. Sometimes, we make business more complicated than it needs to be.

Communicating openly and honestly to your customers and employees will help them do their jobs better. Thanking them for their efforts and business often will make them all feel part of the team and want to come to work each day. Customers like to work with companies that show they care and appreciate their business by communicating with them. These habits will help build respect in your organization and attract good people.

The same goes for the vendors that you select to support your business. It’s important they show respect for your business and employees. Good vendor relations are as important as employees and customers. You need to make sure that they are responsive and understand your needs. They also need to be companies you respect and enjoy working with.

Munger’s third rule was, “Don’t sell anything you wouldn’t buy yourself.” Quality and service are still the keys to success in most businesses. From the sales side, you can quickly lose years of respect by compromising in these areas.

I also wanted to thank everyone who voted for the reader’s choice award winners announced in this month’s USGlass magazine. Frameless Hardware Company (FHC) was excited to receive the award for our Aspire Insulated Glass Entrance System. It means a lot to the entire FHC team to be recognized by our peers. I hope you spend some time reviewing all the winners. These are companies and products respected by our industry.

Thank you all for supporting my blog. We wish you and your family a happy holiday season and new year.
